Dr. Marius Welling

Dr. Marius Welling is a partner, heads the Dispute Resolution practice group and advises clients on all aspects of dispute resolution and prevention. He has a particular focus on banking and capital markets disputes as well as large-scale and mass litigation. He also has extensive experience in internal investigations.

Biography

Dr. Marius Welling is a proven expert in complex commercial litigation. He uses both his extensive legal expertise and the special insights he gained as in-house counsel and most recently as general counsel of a listed company.

Dr. Marius Welling initially worked for a US law firm, where he represented companies and individuals in numerous high-profile proceedings in all areas of commercial law. A particular focus was the representation of financial services providers and companies in the capital markets, as well as advisor and director liability and corporate litigation. He then switched to the inhouse side and headed the 'Litigation and Investigations' team in Germany for a major Swiss bank. In addition to resolving disputes in and out of court, he was responsible for the prevention of disputes through appropriate internal measures as well as for representation before criminal and supervisory authorities, especially in well-known tax issues, and their internal investigation and follow-ups. Most recently, he gained knowledge in litigation financing and, as general counsel, directly advised the executive board and supervisory board of a listed AG on all corporate and capital market law issues as well as on compliance and money laundering issues.

Dr. Marius Welling publishes in particular on topics of banking and capital markets litigation and is a sought-after lecturer, especially on issues of mass litigation and internal investigations. He also works academically on problems and solutions in collective redress, such as the European representative action.

Dr. Marius Welling was admitted to the bar in 2006. After studying at the Universities of Trier and Salamanca (Spain), he completed his practical training in Frankfurt and New York. He has also been qualified as a specialist lawyer for banking and capital markets law since 2012.

During his inhouse time, Dr. Marius Welling was a member of the legal committee of the Frankfurt Chamber of Industry and Commerce and of the General Counsel Leadership Circle of the German Institute of Corporate Lawyers. He is currently i.a. a member of the Banking Law Association, the Working Group on Banking and Capital Markets Law of the German Bar Association and the advisory board of Dispute Resolution Magazine.
